Munky sat down with the crew at Soho to get a feel for what changes and RAD! stuff they have coming up over the next 12 months.

Interviewer
Mic Doney (MD) Munky.com.au

Respondent (s)
Emanuel (EF) - Operations Manager
Will (WW) - Web & Media Manager

MD (Munky) – So what’s been happening around Soho lately, we see new nights appearing, the rebranding of old nights and hiring of new staff?

WW - We've had a few new staff come on recently across all areas so we have loads of fresh ideas and putting them into action as best we can. A ladies night on thursdays, a huge friday night for the uni students and of course The Usual Suspects on Saturdays for the more discerning Sydney club scene

MD (Munky) –  With all that (above) how do you see the clubbing market over the next 12 months, what’s Soho going for, uni kids, hardcore clubbing crowd,  more refined bar crowd?

WW - We have a lot of flexibility within our venue a lot of our competitors don't. With two levels, 4 bars and so many different rooms we can offer so much over the course of the week. Apart from the parties i mentioned above, our main bar is packed every weeknight with people having drinks after work, we have poker twice a week & there's innumerable hens nights here each week! As such I'd be confident in saying we fully cater to most markets not in the least the regular clubbers, VIP's, backpackers, locals, the refined cocktail types & of course uni students (we try not to mix them all up though!)

This summer is going to be huge for the Sydney clubbing scene though, with more festivals and day parties planned than ever before and some amazing international names coming out.

MD (Munky) – With the steady influx an over saturation of cashed promoters thinking they can open their own wine bar or cool back alley watering hole in Kings Cross, how has Soho survived the times against the flood of new players to the market?

WW - Experience always has been, and always will be key to doing ANYTHING successfully. We see it in bars, clubs, festivals & day parties all over the place when someone thinking they can make a quick buck jump into the market but typically they are gone as quick as they came. At the end of the day though, the successful venues all feed off each other and the cool little small bars in the area are great if you ask me - grab a bite to eat & a couple of drinks as the sun goes down then come down to soho to end the night with a bang!

MD (Munky) – Tell Munky about The Usual Suspects and what the night means for Sydney’s party crowd and what type of person can we see at the event?

WW - The usual suspects is our little blend of clubbing, we take everything we see that is good in the Sydney Club scene, leave out the rubbish, throw in some influences from interstate & international clubs then mix it all together with our own skills & experience. what results is something we feel is pretty special - and with over 1500 people every week this year to confirm it - we're pretty sure Sydney agrees!

MD (Munky) –  What has been the most memorable night that you can remember at Suspects and why?

EF - Laidback Luke was an amazing night. The vibe was insane and the crowd was amazing. More recently our Christmas in July party was a massive success and again just an incredible atmosphere.

WW - Of course the nights with the huge internationals are great (theres certainly been a lot of them), but some of the best nights come out of nowhere for us!

To be honest though, our very first HOP (event) was amazing. you'd have to ask some of the other suspects about  what happened that night though, everyone seems to get a little blushed when we mention it now.

MD (Munky) - What is HOP?

WW - Only one of the most crazy things you'll ever experience....keep your ears to the ground & you might be lucky enough to find out more.

MD (Munky) – Munky also heard through unnamed sources that you have some BIG plans for the 2012 summer, do you care to drop a few hints?

WW - Where to even start?? Some of the BIGGEST DJ's from around the world, some after parties (can't say to much right now, but rest assured you won't be disappointed) & some spectacular day parties.

2011 has been ours. now watch us take out summer our style!

MD (Munky) – Do you have any advice or message for someone looking to get into the club market today?

EF - Work in another industry haha jokes… I would say know your market, don’t let your haters/detractors get to you and always stay grounded and respect the people that make your events happen.

MD (Munky) – What do you see that’s wrong and right with todays clubbing market?

EF - Too many people let their egos get the best of them and forget about what the industry is all about. I think more people need to base their operations on what the people want not what they perceive wanting.

WW - Too many people chasing a quick dollar. and too many people with little to no experience who think they are gods

MD (Munky) – If you had $50 in Kings Cross what would you do?

EF - If I am already in Kings Cross I probably wouldn’t have $50. My money almost instantly leaves my wallet and enters the hands of a bartender or kebab store owners.

WW - It would probably go straight into my girlfriends purse…..(laughs)

MD (Munky) – Thats the most honest thing if ever heard Will.

WW - Well it's true.

MD (Munky) – Any last words or comments?

WW - Our brand after 1 year is only getting started. Expect to see a lot more from us and a lot of things you wont expect from other clubs. We pride ourselves on being anything but Usual.
