DJ Sammy Jo
About me
In 1997, DJ Sammy Jo took his first steps into a dj booth at the legendary New York City nightclub MOTHER (home to the infamous Jackie 60 party) for his first ever nightlife venture called Messy.
Expanding his play-list to include current dance music, Sammy Jo was eventually recruited to play at the original cyberfetish party Click + Drag where he met and collaborated with Jake Shears of the soon-to-be-formed Scissor Sisters.
As neighbours and like-minded artists, the two discovered a common passion for all types of music. In the spring of 2004 Shears asked Sammy Jo to dj on the Scissor Sisters Crevice Canyon Tour, a union that worked so well the band recruited him as their official tour dj. Since then Sammy Jo has been playing clubs throughout Europe on his own - creating a name for himself while also supporting the Scissor Sisters whenever they call on him.
From 2006 Sammy Jo has been represented by London based JUMPDJ LTD music management, an agency specializing in underground, avant- garde and iconic acts from around the world. Sammy Jo’s unique style of blending electro, house, and dark disco has gained him a strong worldwide client base. He spends half his year travelling the globe - from the O2 Arena stadium in London to club RAZZMATAZZ in Barcelona, from LaMESSA afterhours events in Milan to warehouse parties in Antwerp, playing for 60,000 people at V Festival - while the other half he maintains residencies in New York City.
In less than 30 words, how would you describe your music?
electro-retro-housey-disco.
Who are your musical idols and inspirations?
Arthur Baker, Stuart Price, Johnny Dynell, and Burt Bachrach.
Favourite club to do a set and why?
Loose Ends. Because it's a filthy basment club where anything can happen. And it's on a sunday which is always a good sign.
Favourite gig you've played to date?
I just played at Glastonbury for 80,000 people opening for the Scissor Sisters. Bonkers!
We plan to break into your car - what can we expect to find in your CD player?
Yeah good luck with that one cause I don't own a car. If you had a time machine and broke into my car in university you would find mixed tapes and cigarettes!
Your fool proof hangover cure?
Vicodin, hands down.
Is getting laid a big part of being a DJ?
No. Anyone who says it is is a complete joke and should change jobs.
One record you're embarrassed to admit you own?
Candy by Mandy Moore. I can't help myself.
The weirdest thing a fan has ever done?
Some straight guy asked me to autograph his ass.
One thing you're willing to confess to your fellow Munkys?
I know the entire album "Physical" by heart. Still. I'm sorry but John Farrar is a genius.
